Tri-State regetta Race update

  • September 06, 2023

Friday night’s Chicago to St. Joe race saw 87 boats come to the starting area.  Racers were greeted with wind in the teens out of the southeast.  Overnight, the wind slowly clocked around to the southwest, putting true wind just aft of abeam as boats ran the rhumb line to St. Joe. This made for fun fast sailing.

Saturday’s festivities included the annual beach volleyball tournament along with the epic party hosted by St. Joseph River Yacht Club. Hundreds of attendees enjoyed the cookout and crowded the dance floor listening to perennial favorite Libido Funk Circus.

The fleet split on Sunday to race either back to Chicago or on to Michigan City. Chicago racers saw wind in the mid to upper teens out of the southwest, putting the fleet close to a beat on port tack sail. Once again, it was rhumb line sailing all the way back to Chicago.

The St. Joe to Michigan City leg of the Tri-State Regatta greeted racers with the double whammy of wind in the upper teens right on the nose,  and waves of 1-2 feet. The wind gradually lightened up, while the wave state remained.. Sailors had to make rapid adjustments to their strategies and sail configurations to stay competitive.

Regrettably, some of the slower boats were unable to complete the course within the allotted time frame, resulting in their retirement from the race. This leg of the Tri-State Regatta underscored the importance of adaptability and skill in the face of fluctuating wind and wave patterns, making it a memorable and testing experience for all participants.

The Michigan City to Chicago leg of the Tri-State Regatta, historically a howler, presented sailors with a unique set of challenges due to exceptionally light winds coming from the south and southwest. Sailors had to rely on their patience and tactical skills as they navigated the calm watersIn an attempt to find wind.

The wind gods eventually relented, as the wind picked up somewhat near the finish line of the 26 mile course.. This welcomed breeze provided a much-needed boost to all the boats, and all the competitors were able to complete the leg.

This year’s Tri-State and Bi-State Events showcased the importance of adaptability and strategic thinking in the face of fickle conditions.

Thank you to Columbia Yacht Club, St. Joseph River Yacht Club, Jackson Park Yacht Club, and Michigan City Yacht Club for another great great Tri-State/Bi-State Weekend!
