Program:  The SJRYC swim team program is designed to provide swim instruction and competitive training for age group swimmers 5 – 18 yrs.   The program will promote competitive swimming for all levels of ability.  The purpose is to give both experienced and novice swimmers the opportunity to compete and to improve their skills.  The season runs from early June through late July.

Requirements:  Swimmers must be able to swim one length of a 25 yard pool and their families must be members of the St. Joseph River Yacht Club.

Age Divisions:  Each swimmer competes in an age group based on the swimmer’s age as of June 1st.  The age group divisions are as follows:

7 and under                    8 year olds                                9-10 year olds

11-12 years old             13-14 year olds                        15-18 year olds

Swim meets:  The SJRYC swim team competes in a swim league through the Michiana Association of Private Swim Clubs (MAPSC).  There are 5 dual meets in 2008 (2 Away and 3 Home) and a conference meet.  Transportation can be arranged for away meets if needed.  Volunteers are greatly appreciated, especially during home meets.

Important Information

Swim Suits: May be purchased at Fast Times Swim Gear (http://www.fasttimesswimgear.com/).

Swim team registration: Occurs at the Spring Work Session or contact Julie Warmbein, 2008 Head Swim Mom.

Cost: There is a per child charge for swim team membership.

Inclement weather:  Parents, use discretion.  Sprinkling – there’s practice.  Pouring or any thunder or lightening – no practice.

Swim meets: We will no longer use sign-up sheets for meets.  All swimmers will be entered in the meet line-up unless the coach is informed of a conflict.  Kids unable to attend a meet must let the Head Coach (Brad German) know (call or email) by 5pm Monday so that he can plan accordingly.  Participation is required in two meets to swim in conference.

Newsletters: Will be distributed on Fridays (doughnut day).  Please pick them up or ask your child to get one.

Private swim lessons: Lessons are available.  Contact a "Swim Mom" or Pool Committee Member for information.

Swim Meets

Dual swim meets are held on Wednesdays, both home and away.  Conference is usually held on the last Monday in July (rain date is Tuesday) at Knollwood Country Club.  The scheduled meet dates and times will be announced as soon as available but home meets generally start around 10 a.m.  Check the club's calendar for up-to-date information.  The 2008 Swim Team Banquet will be held on Thursday, July 17th.

"Swim Moms"/Parent Volunteers

Parent Volunteers are appreciated and very much needed in the swim program.  Parents are needed at home meets as timers, scorers, announcers, starters, etc.  For away meets, some parents are needed as drivers and as helpers for the host team.  Please do not hesitate to volunteer because you are new to the swimming scene.  None of it is hard to learn and it really is more fun to be involved.  Additionally, the "Swim Moms" can always use help from other parents.

"Swim Moms" - Each year two to three parents volunteer as "Swim Moms".  These individuals help coordinate the swim program and assist the Swim Coaches as needed.
